A poem has to be understood before it can be spoken.
Suhrid Das teaches from one belief: when you truly understand a poem, the voice follows. Every lesson begins with the words on the page, what they mean and why the poet chose them, long before anything is spoken aloud.
He is a performer as well as a mentor and vocal coach, and that shapes how he teaches. Students of every age learn from someone who still steps on stage himself. Through Ishika, the cultural centre he founded, they also get a real stage of their own.

Suhrid Das founded Ishika in Kolkata in 2000 to give recitation and the spoken arts a home of their own. Over the years, its programmes across Kolkata, in Rabindra Sadan, Sisir Mancha, Bangla Academy, Jibanananda Sabhagriha, Rammohan Mancha, Rabindra Okakura Bhavan, EZCC, and Bharatbarshiya Brahmamandir, have become a regular part of the city's cultural calendar. Throughout 2025–2026, Ishika is celebrating its glorious 25 years.

আমি শ্রীমতী পর্ণা গুপ্ত কাঞ্জিলাল, দমদমের একটি প্রাথমিক বিদ্যালয়ের শিক্ষিকা। আমি বিগত ছয় মাস যাবৎ আবৃত্তি শিল্পী শ্রীযুক্ত সুহৃদ দাস মহাশয়ের কাছে আবৃত্তির পাঠ নিচ্ছি। ওনার বাচনভঙ্গি, শিক্ষার্থীর প্রতি সহানুভূতি বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না। আবৃত্তির সময় কিভাবে স্বরের ওঠানামা করতে হয়, কখন শ্বাস নিতে হয় এবং কোথায় শ্বাস ছাড়তে হয় সবকিছু আমি বিশদভাবে স্যারের কাছেই শিখেছি। স্যার আমার কাছে শুধু শিক্ষাগুরুই নন, উনি আমার পথপ্রদর্শক। কোন কবিতা ঈশ্বরকে উদ্দেশ্য করে লেখা এবং কোন কবিতায় প্রকৃতির রং রস মাধুর্য উপভোগ করা যায় এসবকিছুই আমি আমার এই সংক্ষিপ্ত আবৃত্তি শেখার জীবনে জানতে পেরেছি, উপলব্ধি করতে পেরেছি।
Recitation is an art. Mastering it is a great achievement. Suhrid sir is a great and skillful reciter & mentor. Learning from him has made me good and confident in recitation. Stepping up and performing on stage in front of audience improves your confidence and mentality.
আমি ২০১৬ সালে যখন সরিষা রামকৃষ্ণ মিশনে পঞ্চম শ্রেণীতে পড়ি, তখন আমি স্যারকে পাই। তখন থেকেই আমি আবৃত্তি শিখছি। স্যার আমাদের খুব যত্ন সহকারে আবৃত্তি শেখান। স্যার আমাদের প্রতি বৎসর বিভিন্ন হলে (শিশির মঞ্চে, ব্রাহ্ম সমাজ মন্দিরে, রামমোহন হলে) আবৃত্তির অনুষ্ঠানে নিয়ে যান। অনুষ্ঠানগুলি স্যার নিজেই খুব সুন্দর ভাবে পরিচালনা করেন।
সুহৃদ স্যার শুধু একজন ভালো শিক্ষকই নন, অভিভাবকের মতো ভালো মানুষ গড়ার পথপ্রদর্শকও। তিনি সবসময় বলেন, ভালো শিল্পী হতে গেলে আগে ভালো মানুষ হতে হয়, যা আজকের সমাজে খুব দরকার। আমাদের খুব যত্ন নিয়ে শেখান, গড়ে তোলার চেষ্টা করেন। তাঁর অনুপ্রেরণায় ও আদর্শে যেন জীবনে সঠিক পথে এগিয়ে চলতে পারি, এটাই প্রার্থনা।
আমি একজন সঙ্গীত ও আবৃত্তির শিক্ষার্থী। আমার মনে হয় প্রত্যেক সঙ্গীতশিল্পীর কবিতা শেখা খুব প্রয়োজন, কারণ তাতে নিজের কণ্ঠ থেকে সঠিক উচ্চারণ তুলে ধরা যায়। তাই আমি ২০২২ সাল থেকে মাননীয় সুহৃদ দাস মহাশয়ের কাছে কবিতা অনুশীলন করছি। খুব যত্ন সহকারে উনি আমায় উচ্চারণ শেখান, আমিও যতটা সম্ভব চেষ্টা করে চলেছি শেখার। উনি আমাকে অনেক অনুষ্ঠানে অংশগ্রহণ করার সুযোগ করে দিয়েছেন। আমিও খুব সফলতার সাথে ওনার শেখানো কবিতা পরিবেশন করেছি এবং সুনাম অর্জন করেছি।
স্যারের কাছে আবৃত্তি শিখে নতুন প্রেরণা পাই, যা আমাদের মানসিক চিন্তাধারাকে উন্নত করার পথেও সাহায্য করে। আপনি মানুষ হিসেবেও খুব ভালো এবং আমাদের পরম শ্রদ্ধার। এভাবেই যেন বাকি জীবন আপনার কাছ থেকে প্রেরণা পেয়ে আবৃত্তি শিখে যেতে পারি।

Who can join the classes?
Students of any age. Both the group classes in New Town and the online classes are open to everyone.
Do I need any prior experience?
No. Every student starts with understanding the poem and works up from there, so beginners and experienced reciters learn side by side.
Where are the offline classes held?
Group classes are held in New Town, Kolkata.
Can I learn from outside Kolkata or outside India?
Yes. Online classes are held live via Google Meet or Zoom, so you can learn from anywhere in the world.
Are one-on-one classes available?
Yes, one-on-one classes are available online. Call to discuss a time that suits you.
What will I learn?
Classical and modern recitation and sruti natok, along with understanding the poem, pronunciation, expression, delivery, handling the microphone, and performing on stage.
Will I get a chance to perform?
Students can perform at programmes organised by Ishika, the cultural centre founded by Suhrid Das.
